ARWS racing in South America includesexpedition length, international races which are Qualifiers for the Adventure Racing World Championship, and a series of shorter regional races which form the South America Series.
The Qualifiers are 5-7 day, non-stop, races, from 400-500m in length. The winners receive automatic, free entry to the Adventure Racing World Championship and all teams taking part receive points in the ARWS global rankings.
There have been Qualifier races held in Chile, Brazil, Ecuador, Paraguay, Colombia, Argentina, Costa Rica and Panama, and the region has hosted the World Championship 4 times. (The Qualifier races rotate and are not held every year.)
The ARWS South America Series is a collection of the best mid-distance adventure races in the region, set to test athletes over 100-250km of non-stop day and night racing. (Qualifiers are not part of the regional series.) The regional races are held in different countries and there is an ARWS Brazil Series of 4 races.
Points from each race count towards the regional rankings and each year a new race hosts the South America Regional Championship with the winning premier mixed team receiving a place at the next World Championship. (To qualify at least 2 of the team must be from South America and go the World Championship.)
