"Set in the rugged natural landscapes surrounding Woodridge College near Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth), South Africa, the Mammoth Woodridge Adventure Race is one of Southern Africa’s most established and accessible adventure racing events. Designed to welcome newcomers while still challenging experienced teams, the race delivers a true navigation-based adventure racing experience across diverse Eastern Cape terrain.
Teams navigate through a course of unmarked wilderness checkpoints, relying solely on map and compass navigation. Disciplines include trekking, mountain biking, paddling, and optional technical elements depending on the race format and conditions. The course showcases rolling farmland, indigenous forests, rivers, coastal influences, and remote backcountry routes that reward smart navigation, teamwork, and efficient decision-making.
The event offers three race distances, making it suitable for a wide range of abilities:
Mini Adventure (±20–25 km) – A shorter, introductory race ideal for first-time adventure racers, juniors, or teams wanting a taste of the sport in a supportive environment.
Dose of Adventure (±60–75 km) – A full-day adventure that tests navigation skills, endurance, and team strategy, while remaining achievable for developing teams.
Adventure for the Brave (±125–150 km) – A demanding multi-discipline challenge aimed at experienced teams looking for extended racing, night navigation, and preparation for expedition-length events.
The Mammoth Woodridge Adventure Race places a strong emphasis on fair racing, safety, and development of the sport, with well-designed courses, experienced race management, and a welcoming community atmosphere. The event regularly attracts teams from across South Africa and serves as a stepping stone for athletes aspiring to compete in longer ARWS expedition races.
With reliable logistics, varied terrain, and a reputation for excellent course design, Mammoth Woodridge AR is a must-do race on the African adventure racing calendar and an ideal destination event for international teams seeking a high-quality race experience in South Africa."
