Vive La Difference
Quotes from Anne-Marie Dunhill (intrepid sleepmonsters reporter)
La Chapelle en Valgaudemar, France.
From this tiny French town in the French Alps near Gap thirteen teams departed on a course that the Race Director Pascal Bahaud describes as 'Back to Nature'. It promises outstanding varied terrain (from the Alps to the Sea) and a high level of difficulty for the racers. They will only meet up with their assistants twice during the race and as such will need to transport in their backpacks enough food for long sections.
The race starts with a short orienteering section and rafting section before departing into the high passes. The first teams out of the snow covered trek are three French teams Quecha, followed closely by Cateye - Outdoor Expériences and Planet Tonique. They depart on the 88kms nike leg through the Ecrins National Parc
The order is set and these three teams go on to the podium. But to do this they must pass through the complete range of terrain - from the high snow covered Alps which they quickly leave behind - to grassy high alpine meadows - still struggling to recover from the heavy European snow fall of last year, to the deep spectacular canyon known as the 'Gorge Verdon'. The Raid in France has it all.
The race finishes with a paddle down the Argens river into the waves of the Mediterranean and a finish line in the port of Fréjus.
"The arrival in the port of Fréjus was ... magic," said Laurent Fabre. (team Quecha captain) “Raid in France, as a whole, is a magical race with breathtaking and incredible sights.”
Winning Time: 130 hours and 10 minutes of racing. - Team Quecha |
