All teams, as well as the organization members, are finishing up last minute details for this amazing race coming up.
The new edition of Huairasinchi's route, that starting this year is a member of the AR World Series, will comprehend several different ecosystems and extreme challenges. Racers will have to travel across the Andes and explore beautiful landscapes while descending to warmer temperatures, discovering volcanoes, rivers, unnamed waterfalls and unique biodiversity as well as some isolated, folkloric and indigenous communities. All teams must be prepared to face the hard cold weather of the Andes and should also be prepared to cope with dramatic altitude changes. The experience will be unique!
Huairasinchi 2009 will started this Thursday, February 19th with registration in Quito, followed by the transportation of all teams to the starting point on Friday, hours away from Ecuador's capital city. The race start was on Saturday February 21st at 8am. All route details from the secret route were revealed during registration.
Here are some details of what Huairasinchi's route will offer this year. This information will help participants plan the last days of training and the acclimatization strategies for the race, and will allow everybody who is following the race to understand how demanding and extreme Huairasinchi is going to be this year.
General route information:
Maximum Altitude: 4400 meters
Minimum Altitude: 33 meters
Weather: Very cold and rainy weather in the mountain areas, snow possibilities in the high mountain passes and summits. In the lower lands there is hot and humid weather.
Route Distances:
Trekking: 97 Km
Mountain Bike: 204.4 Km
Ropes: 0.3 Km
Paddling: 30 Km
Orienteering: 1:50000 maps will be used throughout the entire race
